From Strings to Things: How Natural Language Processing is Rewriting the Rules of Ranking

By Kris Donovan5 Min Read

For years, search engines were essentially highly advanced filing cabinets. If a user searched for the string of letters “best plumber”, the algorithm simply looked for web pages containing that exact string of letters. But with the introduction of updates like Hummingbird, BERT, and MUM, Google stopped reading letters and started understanding the world.

“Google no longer ranks your content based on how many times a keyword appears. It ranks you based on how well it understands the ‘Thing’ you are talking about.”

What NLP Means for SEO

Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows AI to understand context, sentiment, and relationships. If you write an article about “Apple,” NLP helps the crawler determine if you mean the fruit, the tech company, or the record label, based on the surrounding words (entities) like iPhone, orchard, or Beatles.

When you optimize for NLP, your goal is to make these contextual relationships as mathematically clear as possible.

  • Stop Keyword Stuffing: Forcing “Plumber in Chicago” into every header confuses NLP models.
  • Start Entity Mapping: Use related concepts naturally. Mention pipe fitting, water heaters, and Cook County.

Translating Language with EAP

Even with the smartest NLP algorithms, Google still has to guess your intent based on your text. The most powerful SEO strategy is to remove the guesswork entirely by explicitly defining your content using JSON-LD schema.

  1. Identify the Core Entity: Use the EAP Drawer to declare exactly what a page is about. Is it a LocalBusiness? A MedicalWebPage? A JobPosting?
  2. Define the Attributes: Use EAP’s visual builder to fill in specific properties. Instead of hoping Google reads your pricing table, use the Offer schema to explicitly state your price and currency.
  3. Establish Relationships: Link your entities together. EAP automatically maps your Article to your Organization, and your Organization to its verified sameAs profiles. You are handing the NLP model a pre-solved puzzle.
