Keyword Conflict Detector: Fix Cannibalization

More content does not always mean more traffic. If your agency publishes multiple blog posts or service pages targeting the exact same concept, you aren’t building a moat—you are building a maze. The Conflict Detector finds where your pages are fighting each other.

“When two of your pages fight for the same keyword, Google gets confused about which one is the true authority. As a result, it suppresses the rankings for both.”

The Threat of Keyword Cannibalization

In Entity SEO, clarity is power. Each primary entity (or topic) should have one definitive pillar page. If you have a page titled “Best Plumber in Chicago” and another page titled “Chicago Plumbing Services,” Google’s AI model struggles to determine which page is the definitive source.

The EAP Conflict Detector runs a complex algorithm against 30 days of live Google Search Console data. It looks for search queries that are generating impressions for multiple URLs on your site, and explicitly flags instances where a Competing Page is stealing significant visibility from your Primary Page.

How to Run a Conflict Audit

Stop hunting through spreadsheets. Follow these steps to diagnose and resolve overlapping entities.

  1. Run the Scan: Navigate to the Conflict Detector in the EAP Cloud and click “Scan for Conflicts.”
  2. Review the Overlap: The system will output a list of conflicting queries. For each query, it will show you the “Primary Page” (the one getting the most clicks) and the “Competing Page” (the one stealing the traffic).
  3. Deploy the Fix: Once you identify a conflict, you have three strategic ways to resolve it:
    • De-optimize: If the competing page is valuable for a different topic, remove the conflicting keyword from its Title Tag, H1, and Schema markup.
    • Merge & 301 Redirect: If the competing page offers no unique value, copy its best content over to the Primary Page, delete the competing page, and set up a 301 redirect.
    • Canonicalize: If you must keep both pages live but want Google to only rank one, place a rel="canonical" tag on the Competing Page pointing to the Primary Page.
  4. Signal Google: After applying the fix, use the Signal Tower to force Google to recrawl the affected URLs.
